The ongoing review of Fiji’s Education Act is making steady progress, spearheaded by education veteran Rokobua Naiyaga and in collaboration with key ministries and legal experts. This initiative aims to update the current framework to better meet the diverse needs of Fijians. Key ministries involved in this comprehensive review include Finance, Women, Health, iTaukei Affairs, and Rural Development, which contribute insights on essential topics such as child protection and health, cultural inclusion, and rural education.
Legal experts, including advisors David Solvalu and Lyanne Vaurasi, are working closely with the Fiji Law Reform Commission and the Office of the Solicitor General to craft a well-structured draft law. This process is supported by various stakeholders, including statutory bodies like the Fiji Higher Education Commission and the Fiji Teachers Registration Authority, reinforcing a commitment to a robust educational framework.
In the coming weeks, the review team will host national public consultations across all nine education districts, providing an inclusive platform for community members to share their perspectives. The goal of these sessions is to gather valuable feedback that will contribute to shaping a more inclusive, safe, and future-ready education system, ensuring that every Fijian’s voice is heard in this critical process.
This review is a continuation of prior efforts to modernize the Education Act, which was last revised in 1966. Recent workshops have highlighted the urgent need for reforms to address gaps such as digital literacy and inclusive education methods, which have become increasingly important in today’s educational landscape. Minister Aseri Radrodro has previously indicated that the Act needs to evolve to support contemporary educational demands, reflecting a broader effort towards innovation in Fiji’s educational policies.
With this proactive approach to education reform, there is optimism for enhanced academic outcomes that cater to the needs of students and society. By fostering collaboration across various sectors and encouraging public participation, the Ministry of Education is paving the way for a more effective and adaptive educational framework that can withstand future challenges and prepare students for a dynamic world.
