The Ministry of Education in Fiji is prioritizing the need to overhaul the Education Act of 1966, according to Education Minister Aseri Radrodro. The proposed reforms aim to address the growing issue of school dropouts and provide better support for displaced students who currently fall outside the ministry’s jurisdiction. Radrodro highlighted that under the existing Act, once students leave school, they are no longer the responsibility of the Ministry, putting limitations on effective intervention.

Radrodro pointed out that the inadequacies of the current legal framework have become evident as discussions on educational challenges have taken place, including topics addressed at last year’s Denarau Education Summit. He emphasized the necessity for a comprehensive approach that involves collaboration between various stakeholders, including families, community members, and educators, to tackle the issue of student absenteeism and dropouts.

In addition to the need for a review of dropout policies, Radrodro noted that the starting age for Early Childhood Education also warrants reassessment, as many children currently begin school at the age of four. He stated that these issues must be recognized within the revised Education Act to prevent ongoing educational flaws.

The Minister’s planned talks with the Fiji Law Reform Commission aim to explore how these concerns might be addressed through legal amendments. The proposal underscores a well-rounded approach to education that includes not only traditional academic pathways but also practical vocational training opportunities designed to engage students who may struggle in conventional settings.

Previously, Radrodro has advocated for the introduction of Vocational Technical Institutes modeled after successful programs observed during his visit to New Zealand. Such institutes offer vocational training in fields like construction and auto-mechanics, equipping students with skills necessary for their futures.

Overall, the call for a review and reform presents a hopeful outlook for Fiji’s education system, allowing it to adapt to the evolving needs of students and society. Strengthening the ties between education, community, and family responsibility carries the promise of fostering a more supportive environment for all learners.
