Fiji’s Opposition Leader Inia Seruiratu has raised significant concerns regarding the state of the economy, particularly emphasizing that nine key sectors are currently struggling to recover to pre-pandemic levels. During a recent parliamentary discussion, he highlighted that essential industries like construction, mining, manufacturing, accommodation, and arts and entertainment have been adversely affected, largely due to a 3% increase in concession rates outlined in the 2023-2024 budget.

Seruiratu expressed alarm at the government’s perceived inaction, stating, “This budget offers no comprehensive strategy to target their recovery – no tailored stimulus package – no incentive frameworks – no direct capital injections. Sad.” He pointed out that while tourism may be driving some levels of economic growth, other critical sectors remain stagnant, leading to what he describes as an unsustainable situation that contributes to the growing budget deficit.

Similar critiques have echoed in recent discussions, where Seruiratu and other opposition members have questioned the government’s approach to managing economic recovery. They argue that without targeted support for essential industries, Fiji may continue to face prolonged economic challenges. The mounting pressure reflects ongoing apprehensions about the financial health of the nation and the urgent need for strategic planning aimed at ensuring that all sectors benefit from recovery efforts.

In light of these challenges, there is still hope that constructive discussions within Parliament can lead to viable solutions for enhancing the economic landscape. By advocating for targeted strategies and fostering collaboration between various stakeholders, there remains potential for sustainable growth and investment that could invigorate the struggling sectors.

Engaging various parts of the economy in thoughtful dialogue could potentially pave the way for a stronger foundation, enabling Fiji to achieve broader recovery and growth in the face of these challenges.
