A new initiative to educate commuters about the e-ticketing system in Fiji is receiving attention following comments from IT professional Mohammed Nafeez. He believes that the Land Transport Authority (LTA) should lead a structured awareness campaign to inform users about the benefits and functionality of the new system. This proactive step would ensure that commuters can effectively utilize e-ticketing, reflecting a broader commitment to enhancing public transportation.

Nafeez emphasized the importance of providing mandatory training for bus drivers and other public transport operators, which would be delivered by the e-ticketing infrastructure provider in collaboration with accredited technical and vocational education institutions. This training is essential to guarantee that all personnel are well-versed in the system, ultimately improving its implementation.

A significant issue in the public transportation sector, as highlighted by Nafeez, is the ongoing acceptance of cash payments by some drivers. This practice not only encourages revenue leakages but also opens avenues for tax evasion, undermining the integrity of the transportation system. The LTA has acknowledged these concerns and is already working on improvements.

The LTA’s chief executive officer, Irimaia Rokosawa, has previously communicated the authority’s commitment to augmenting the e-ticketing experience, particularly by expanding recharge options and enhancing technical support. The LTA is also conducting a thorough review of public feedback to ensure compliance with existing regulations concerning fare payments and the verification of bus cards.

This collective effort indicates a positive trajectory for Fiji’s public transport system. By prioritizing education and training alongside addressing systemic challenges, there is hope for a more user-friendly, transparent, and efficient transportation service that benefits all citizens. In sum, as the government responds to community feedback and focuses on enhancing the e-ticketing system, improvements in public transport accessibility and safety can be anticipated.
