Fiji has experienced significant fluctuations in illicit drug cases over the past five years, highlighting the evolving challenges in drug-related activities and law enforcement, according to Acting Commissioner of Police Sakeo Raikaci. Speaking at the ODPP Annual Conference in Sigatoka, ACP Raikaci emphasized that these trends pose serious risks to public health, community safety, and the nation’s social structure.
The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated the situation by disrupting law enforcement operations and creating economic vulnerabilities that have fueled illicit drug activities. However, Raikaci noted that the challenges faced during this period have provided critical data on drug trends, divisional impacts, types of offenses, and the demographics of offenders. This information offers valuable insights into how to address these issues more effectively in the future.
In 2019, the baseline year, Fiji recorded 1,275 drug-related cases. This figure rose to 1,501 in 2020, an 18 percent increase, attributed to both expanded enforcement efforts and greater drug availability. In 2021, the number of cases fell sharply to 1,032, a 31 percent decrease, likely due to COVID-19 restrictions impacting criminal operations and law enforcement activities.
In 2022, as restrictions eased, cases rebounded to 1,236, reflecting a 19 percent increase. By 2023, Fiji recorded its highest number of cases to date, totaling 1,615, representing a 31 percent rise. This surge underscores the escalating threat of illicit drugs and the growing complexity of combating this issue.
While the statistics may seem daunting, they also present an opportunity for improved strategies and collaborative efforts among law enforcement and community stakeholders. By leveraging the lessons learned during these challenging times, Fiji has the potential to take meaningful steps toward addressing drug-related issues and enhancing public safety.
In summary, Fiji’s drug-related challenges have fluctuated considerably over the years, with the COVID-19 pandemic playing a significant role in these trends. However, the insights gained during this period could serve as a foundation for more effective strategies to combat drug-related activities moving forward.
