Sireli Leweniqila, a representative from Udu district, emphasized the need for law enforcement agencies to conduct a comprehensive evaluation of regions reporting drug-related cases during the Macuata Provincial Council meeting held in Sasa Village, near Labasa Town. As a respected figure and former chairperson of the council, Leweniqila highlighted that certain villages and settlements have yet to experience firsthand the challenges associated with drug use.

He pointed out that areas closer to urban centers tend to have greater access to information about substances like drugs, resulting in both victims and offenders within those communities. “Once the assessment is complete, law enforcement should engage with local traditional leaders to develop strategies that address the unique challenges of drug issues in different villages,” he stated.

Mr. Leweniqila stressed the necessity for stringent penalties against individuals convicted of drug possession, use, or trafficking to serve as a deterrent. He noted how smaller villages can be more effectively managed under the guidance of local leaders, but the migration of youth to cities for education or employment can expose them to drugs, prompting risky choices in search of quick financial gain.

He underscored the global urgency of the drug crisis, exemplified by substances like methamphetamine, which poses a threat even to small nations like Fiji. He urged the need for enhanced border controls, both by land and sea, to protect future generations from the negative impact of drugs. Leweniqila concluded by asserting that while Fiji is celebrated as the ‘Friendly Islands,’ both the government and law enforcement agencies must enforce tougher laws to ensure that individuals engaging in drug offenses understand the serious consequences behind their actions.

This article serves as a call to action for the community as well as law enforcement agencies to unify efforts in combating drug-related issues. By fostering collaboration among traditional leaders, law enforcement, and community members, there is hope for the establishment of safer environments, especially for vulnerable youth.

In summary, Mr. Leweniqila’s insights reflect a proactive approach to tackling drug issues in Fiji, highlighting the importance of assessments, local leadership involvement, and strict legal repercussions as key components in the fight against drug-related challenges.
