Police officials underscored the necessity of adhering to legal protocols during the destruction of 4.15 tonnes of methamphetamine conducted at the Dignified Crematorium in Nausori. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kasiano Vusonilawe emphasized that drugs must not be destroyed without the approval of a court order, especially while cases involving the substances are still in litigation.
SSP Vusonilawe responded to inquiries about the urgency of destroying a significant quantity of illegal drugs by highlighting the importance of judicial processes. “We understand that in many of our cases, where exhibits are involved, it is essential to apply to the court for permission to destroy the drugs and submit a report,” he noted.
The critical nature of these procedures is not just bureaucratic but essential for the integrity of the judicial system. Destroying evidence without proper approval can jeopardize ongoing cases and potentially degrade public trust in law enforcement. “If we act without approval, the case could be thrown out of court, and all the effort, both human and physical, would be wasted,” he added.
