Investing in sports infrastructure and youth programs is recognized as vital to Fiji’s social and economic future, with an emphasis on clear inclusion plans. The Drua Foundation’s youth academy is setting an ambitious goal of achieving gender equality by 2029, aiming to ensure equal representation of 180 boys and girls across six different streams.

Shane Hussein, the Head of Commercial and Marketing at the Fijian Drua, emphasized the importance of gender equality and inclusion, stating, “We have a clear vision and pathway ahead of us.” The academy plans to expand gradually, beginning with one stream dedicated to boys, then introducing a second stream. A third stream for girls is scheduled to be launched in 2026, with the first cohort expected to begin training in 2027.

Hussein pointed out that the focus will first be on developing boys’ rugby, given the existing talent pool and systems in place. However, the growing popularity of girls’ rugby—a relatively new participant in Fiji’s sports landscape—suggests that by the time the girls’ stream launches, there will be a significantly larger talent pool.

By 2029, the academy aspires to establish three boys’ streams and three girls’ streams, each consisting of 30 students. Infrastructure investments, including plans for dormitories to facilitate weekend camps, are also underway, which will ensure privacy and dignity for girls participating in the program.

The Foundation’s approach will provide opportunities for a total of 180 children—90 boys and 90 girls—while maintaining a sustainable growth model. Hussein noted the essential role of financial stability in this expansion, stating that while they would love to implement everything at once, the foundation must avoid any potential funding shortages.

This strategy not only promotes the increasing participation of girls in rugby but also aims to foster a sustainable pipeline of talent for the future. The Drua Foundation remains committed to creating meaningful opportunities and promoting change across Fiji through comprehensive projects that encompass rugby development, education, health, and community inclusiveness. Through effective partnerships and strategic initiatives, the Foundation is dedicated to making a positive impact on Fijian schoolchildren, families, and the future stars of Fiji rugby.
