The vibrant blue of Fiji’s flag was prominently displayed thousands of miles from home as the 2026 World Athletics Cross Country Championships kicked off in Tallahassee, Florida. Representing Fiji were long-distance runners Yeshnil Karan and Ben Ashkettle, who both competed in the men’s senior 10km race, a demanding course consisting of five laps along a two-kilometre circuit.
Karan achieved an impressive finish in 83rd place with a time of 32:55, while Ashkettle placed 111th, clocking in at 37:07. Their race performances were marked by rigorous pacing: Karan consistently improved his positioning throughout the race after starting in 104th place, while Ashkettle also showed determination despite beginning in 121st place.
The race was designed to challenge athletes’ endurance and tactical skills, featuring rolling terrain and various technical sections that tested their ability to maintain energy throughout the event. Karan, who is making his championship debut, has gained recognition in Fiji’s athletics scene, beginning his journey in secondary school and gaining prominence at the 2019 Coca-Cola Games where he secured gold in the senior boys 1500m final.
Ashkettle’s participation is particularly inspiring as he returns to competitive racing after a hiatus, bringing a wealth of experience and resilience. Throughout his athletic career, he has achieved personal bests in numerous long-distance events, including a remarkable time of 28:52.72 in the 10,000m race in 2010 and 1:04:12 in the half-marathon in 2013.
Both athletes’ achievements at such a prestigious event are celebrated by their friends, family, and fellow competitors back in Fiji, raising hopes for continued support in their athletic endeavors. Their participation signifies a significant step forward for Fijian athletics on the international stage, showcasing the nation’s talent and dedication to the sport.
