The Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) has officially received the audited report concerning Walesi from Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Communication, Manoa Kamikamica. This report was acknowledged by FICAC, which has logged it in their Case Management System. The commission assures that they will prioritize the examination of this matter and adhere to all procedural guidelines in their investigation.

The report itself consists of two key components: a Technical Assessment of Fiji’s Digital Television Transmission System and a Special Audit on the financial management of Walesi. Given the gravity of the findings, FICAC Commissioner Barbara Malimali has established a dedicated task force to delve into the contents of the Special Audit Report from the Office of the Auditor General. This report revealed that the government allocated a substantial $123.6 million to the Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) Project and Walesi PTE LTD’s operations between 2015 and 2022.

This investigation is deemed a matter of national significance and was brought to the attention of Parliament during Kamikamica’s Ministerial Statement regarding the investigation into Walesi’s technical and financial practices. Malimali has tasked Assistant Manager of Investigation – Economic Crimes Unit, Alifereti Wakanivesi, with leading the special task force as they commence their work today.

This situation highlights the importance of accountability and transparency in government projects, suggesting a proactive approach by the authorities in addressing potential discrepancies. As the investigation unfolds, there could be opportunities for reform and improved practices in future projects to ensure that public funds are managed effectively. This could ultimately foster greater trust in governmental institutions and their commitment to integrity.

In summary, FICAC is taking substantial steps to investigate the financial management of Walesi following a significant allocation of public funds, signaling a commitment to accountability in national interests.
