Fiji has recently launched its National Digital Strategy 2025-2030, outlining an ambitious roadmap for digital transformation in the country. This strategy targets significant goals including the digitization of 80% of government services by 2030, the creation of 40,000 ICT jobs, achieving 50% coverage of 5G networks, and increasing digital inclusion to 80% across all demographics. The broad aim is to leverage digital technologies as a means to foster socio-economic growth while ensuring that the transformation remains inclusive, sustainable, and resilient.
Key objectives outlined in the strategy include the establishment of a robust National Digital ID, the rollout of comprehensive cybersecurity measures, and focused initiatives to foster digital literacy among citizens. As Fiji ranks 107th out of 176 countries in the ICT Development Index, concerted efforts are required to maintain and enhance its ICT infrastructure, where over 85% of the population currently has access to the internet, far surpassing the global average.
The strategy builds on previous initiatives aiming to make Fiji a digital hub in the Pacific, focusing particularly on empowering underserved communities, including women and marginalized groups, to actively participate in the digital economy. By facilitating access to digital skills training, the government highlights its commitment to bridging the digital divide, allowing all citizens—whether in urban areas or rural communities—an equal opportunity to benefit from digital advancements.
Looking ahead, the strategy sets year-by-year targets aimed at fortifying the nation’s digital framework by 2030. For instance, by 2025, key milestones include developing a National Cybersecurity Strategy and establishing an Integrated Beneficiary Management System. By 2026, reviews of the data protection landscape are planned, along with the launch of a foundational National ID system.
