Defence Minister Pio Tikoduadua has stated that his decision to temporarily step aside from his portfolios was driven by principles of transparency and integrity. He emphasized that the authority to reassign ministerial portfolios ultimately rests with the Prime Minister.
Mr. Tikoduadua expressed that he believed it was crucial to offer his step aside, underscoring the importance of an investigation into his conduct. Although he confirmed that he has been cleared, he reiterated that any decisions regarding his ministry’s responsibilities are at the discretion of the Prime Minister.
In his current capacity, Mr. Tikoduadua oversees the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF), which he described as a reformed organization. He announced the RFMF’s readiness to engage in efforts against drug-related issues, indicating a shift in their role. “It’s vital for Fijians to understand that the RFMF’s involvement in law enforcement will adhere strictly to legal guidelines,” he said.
With the RFMF recently returning to barracks, they are now being asked to take to the streets again in this new capacity. Mr. Tikoduadua assured the public that the soldiers will operate as a professional organization and will uphold the law throughout their operations.
This approach reflects a commitment to maintaining law and order while ensuring accountability and professionalism within the ranks of the RFMF. The focus on lawful conduct suggests a hopeful direction for collaborative efforts in addressing drug issues in Fiji.
