The Land Transport Authority (LTA) of Fiji has issued a stern warning to drivers following a tragic incident that resulted in a man’s death in Savusavu. The accident took place when a man in his 40s was struck by a truck while cutting grass near the roadside. The truck was reportedly driven by a man in his 60s, who lost control, resulting in the collision.

In this incident, both the driver and another passenger sustained injuries and are receiving treatment at Savusavu Hospital. LTA Chief Executive Officer Irimaia Rokosawa described this event as a painful reminder of the importance of responsible driving, especially concerning heavy vehicle operations.

Rokosawa emphasized that careless driving will not be tolerated, as it has caused preventable deaths on Fijian roads. He reiterated the need for prioritizing safety and the LTA’s commitment to working with the police to conduct roadside checks to identify unsafe vehicles and instances of reckless driving, particularly speeding, which continues to be a significant factor in road fatalities this year.

This tragic event aligns with recent data indicating a concerning trend of roadway incidents. In light of previous fatalities, such as the death of a 13-year-old student caused by a truck driver operating with an expired learner’s permit, the LTA’s actions are part of broader efforts to combat reckless driving through stricter regulations and increased enforcement measures.

With the current road death toll standing at 61—a decrease from 76 this time last year—there is a glimmer of hope that continued public awareness campaigns and enforcement may yield safer conditions on Fiji’s roads. Rokosawa called on all road users to take responsibility for their actions, especially as the festive season approaches.

The overall message remains clear: fostering a culture of caution and respect for road safety is vital. Each individual has a role to play in preventing tragedies and ensuring the safety of all road users, highlighting the importance of a collective commitment to road safety in Fiji.

Fostering this culture of accountability can lead to a substantial reduction in accidents and fatalities, encouraging safer driving practices that protect everyone’s lives.
