Fiji’s Dangerous Turn: From Drug Transit to Trafficking Hub

The recently published National Security and Defence Review Report reveals that Fiji has shifted from a mere transit point for transnational organized crime to an actual destination for such activities. The report, released this week, details various factors contributing to this transformation, including a compromised security sector, lax border controls, and the increasing accessibility of drugs, particularly those with harmful additives like fentanyl.

It indicates that the financial gains from drug trafficking to regions with high demand, such as Australia and New Zealand, have enabled local criminal organizations to flourish, as they pursue profits through local sales and protection fees, which further strains Fiji’s already fragile security structures. The report underscores that the lucrative nature of the drug trade allows for significant profits even if only a small percentage reaches its intended market.

Consequently, the remaining portion can fuel local consumption, leading to increased involvement of young people and other vulnerable groups in the drug trade. The report also points out significant challenges within Fiji’s security agencies, such as low morale and insufficient salaries, which create opportunities for criminals to corrupt officials.

Limited personnel and resources hinder effective monitoring of illicit activities at the borders. Moreover, it raises alarms about rising human trafficking, particularly from South Asia, and notes interference with the Department of Immigration, including unauthorized requests for swift visa approvals. This lack of cooperation among government entities, as well as with international partners, further undermines border security.

Additionally, the report addresses the potential for weapons smuggling, stating that while no instances have yet been confirmed, international criminal syndicates typically engage in this practice to safeguard their operations, indicating another threat to national security.

The government is being called upon to tackle these pressing issues by enhancing border security, streamlining customs and immigration procedures, and fostering greater international collaboration. The report also emphasizes the vital contributions of faith-based organizations and youth support groups in mitigating social harm, aiding those struggling with addiction, and bolstering prevention initiatives.
