Opposition MP Vijay Nath has raised concerns regarding the government’s response to the impact of Tropical Cyclone Rae on affected communities, particularly in Vanua Levu. While initial assessments indicate that the region did not suffer extensive damage, the heavy rainfall has led to flooding, prompting agricultural authorities to evaluate the extent of damage to farms.

Nath criticized the government for the seemingly misplaced priorities of its Minister, who chose to visit the Waiqele Airport upgrade rather than focusing on disaster response. He expressed concern about the lack of immediate relief efforts, questioning whether essential items like food rations and tents have reached those in need, notably in the Lau region.

“The people of Fiji deserve a well-coordinated and timely disaster response,” Nath stated, emphasizing the government’s duty to ensure immediate relief and recovery. He noted that this is a significant test for the Coalition Government, pointing out that, while they have issued warnings and coordinated recovery efforts, there are legitimate worries about the efficiency and speed of their response.

The opposition MP echoed sentiments from Deputy Leader of the Opposition, Praveen Bala, who has also criticized the government’s sluggish response to similar flooding issues in the western regions. Bala highlighted the frustrations faced by residents due to insufficient support and called for greater government accountability.

As communities grapple with the repercussions of natural disasters, it is crucial for the government to prioritise immediate humanitarian needs over infrastructural projects. The collective calls for action from opposition leaders underscore the need for swift relief efforts and exemplify the importance of unity and resilience in these challenging times. The hope remains that this crisis will serve as a catalyst for improved disaster response strategies, ensuring that no affected community is left behind.
