Many cybercrime incidents in Fiji remain unreported, primarily due to a lack of trust and insufficient technical expertise, according to the Online Safety Commission. They note that major local businesses are increasingly opting to engage overseas cybersecurity firms rather than reporting incidents to local authorities, which undermines national cybersecurity efforts.
Investigation Officer Samuels Finau emphasizes the necessity for a secure, centralized platform that would allow individuals and organizations to report cyber threats more effectively. He suggests that integrating the Center for Internet Security into Fiji’s planned Computer Emergency Response Team could significantly enhance local cybersecurity measures. Finau states, “We need the right reporting mechanisms. If we don’t mandate reporting policies, then maybe we need a platform where information can be shared between various organizations.” Without proper reporting protocols, authorities are unable to track or respond to cyber threats effectively.
In response to these challenges, the Ministry of Communication is actively developing a reporting portal designed to simplify the process and foster public confidence in reporting. The Head of Cyber Affairs indicated that creating a supportive platform is crucial to encouraging individuals to report incidents promptly and safely.
This ongoing dialogue regarding improvement in cybersecurity frameworks is critical, especially amid rising concerns about the sophistication of cybercrimes. Recent reports highlight multiple scams, including elaborate cyber extortion schemes that have cost victims significant amounts, particularly impacting vulnerable communities. For instance, over 650 scam cases are currently under investigation, signaling a pressing need for enhanced local capabilities to address cyber threats.
