Fiji’s cruise tourism sector is proving to be a significant contributor to the country’s economy, with a total direct contribution of approximately $21.4 million (around F$48 million) in 2023, according to Tourism and Civil Aviation Minister Viliame Gavoka. He also noted an indirect economic contribution estimated at $22.7 million (approximately F$51 million). The Government is keen to maximize these benefits as the cruise tourism sector continues to grow.

In response to inquiries from opposition MP Taito Rokomatu, Mr. Gavoka shared that Fiji welcomed 83,473 cruise ship passengers in 2023, a notable jump from just 15,863 in 2022. The trend is expected to continue, with projections indicating a rise to 86,151 cruise visitors in 2024 and up to 164 cruise visits anticipated for the year, compared to 133 in the past year. This increasing number of visitors has generated $7.4 million for the economy.

On average, cruise passengers contribute positively to local economies in their stops, spending an average of $118 per person per day in Lautoka, $104 in Suva, $102 in Denarau, $56 in Savusavu, and even $3 in Dravuni, Kadavu. Minister Gavoka highlighted the correlation between passenger satisfaction and spending, noting that satisfied guests tend to stay longer onshore and contribute more to local businesses.

The cruise schedule for 2024 indicates that popular stops will include destinations such as Kadavu, Lau (Vanuabalavu and Fulaga), Savusavu, Taveuni, Lautoka, Suva, and Levuka. This increase in cruise tourism reflects Fiji’s growing stature as a premier travel destination, successfully attracting both traditional and expedition cruise liners.

The optimism surrounding this sector is reinforced by previous analyses stating that cruise tourism not only supports local businesses but also enhances cultural exchanges between visitors and residents. This favorable growth trajectory highlights Fiji’s commitment to providing unique travel experiences and sustainable tourism practices.

Overall, Fiji’s cruise tourism industry holds a hopeful perspective for economic growth, as the country continues to invite travelers to explore its captivating natural beauty and rich cultural heritage.
