The Fiji Police Force has reported an alarming 18% increase in crime for February 2025 compared to the same month last year, with theft emerging as the most prevalent offense. Cases of theft surged dramatically from 276 to 414 incidents, with three major cases contributing to 77 individual counts, resulting in estimated business losses of around $1.89 million.
Fiji Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu noted that some reports included multiple counts, which could partially explain the steep rise in statistics. Additionally, there has been a notable rise in cyber-related crimes, marking a total of 52 cases of obtaining financial advantage through deception. This increase indicates a growing public confidence in reporting such incidents to the police.
Notably, serious crimes have also seen a concerning overall rise of 24%. Drug-related offenses have increased by 16%, with law enforcement recording 220 drug-related cases, the majority of which—203—involved unlawful possession. Marijuana remains the most frequently encountered substance, with 188 reported cases.
On a more positive note, crimes against women and children have decreased by 11%. However, serious offenses related to sexual crimes, burglary, aggravated robbery, and motor vehicle theft have risen, with 91 reported sexual offenses, of which 58% involved victims under the age of 18, including a distressing case involving a three-year-old girl.
The report also highlights the involvement of young offenders, as two 17-year-olds were charged with offenses against minors. Furthermore, it is alarming to note that four police officers have been charged with serious violations, including assault.
Despite these worrying figures, the Fiji Police emphasize the critical role of community cooperation in combating rising crime rates. Their commitment to enhancing public safety through continued community engagement and transparency is crucial during these pressing times.
The current situation illustrates the complexities of crime in Fiji but also presents an opportunity for law enforcement and the community to work together more effectively. With proactive measures and collaborative effort, there is hope for fostering a safer environment in the future, highlighting the resilient spirit of the Fijian community as they navigate these challenges.
