The Fiji Police Force is addressing growing concerns regarding a rise in crime within key tourism and business districts, as reported by Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu during the Nadi Business Forum. With 153 officers responsible for a population exceeding 81,000 in Nadi, the ratio translates to one officer for every 533 individuals. This situation reveals the ongoing challenge of resource allocation amidst rising crime rates.

Although the Western Division experienced a decrease in crime in 2023, recent trends indicate a troubling resurgence with over 20,000 cases reported so far this year, including theft, burglary, and assault, which continue to dominate the statistics. Particularly alarming is the shift in drug-related crimes, where methamphetamine manufacturing is increasingly occurring locally, using ingredients sourced online, which poses a significant risk to the youth.

Cybercrime and fraud are also on the rise. The Commissioner highlighted that the lack of sufficient manpower limits police visibility and effectiveness in combatting these issues. Additionally, many police posts are not fully staffed or equipped, leading to a situation where officers are required to cover multiple areas, thus reducing overall community safety presence.

Tudravu emphasized the necessity for a strong partnership with the private sector to bolster law and order, vital for attracting investors and fostering economic growth. He advocated for collective efforts to ensure a safer environment conducive to both community wellbeing and business operations.

As law enforcement agencies continue to face challenges, they remain committed to engaging the community and fostering partnerships that enhance public safety. By working together, police and citizens can create a collaborative approach that aims to improve security and long-term stability in Fiji, marking a hopeful path toward addressing these pressing issues.
