A key aspect of the proposed Counter Narcotics Bill is its emphasis on rehabilitation and community reintegration, aimed at reducing the likelihood of relapses among drug offenders. During public consultations held in Lautoka, Inspector Jemesa Lave from the Ministry of Policing underscored the issue of former offenders returning to Fiji after serving time abroad, often leading to a resurgence in drug use.

Inspector Lave pointed out that the bill would provide offenders with the chance to pursue rehabilitation both prior to and following their arrests, offering a more comprehensive approach to addressing the escalating drug crisis in the country. He emphasized the importance of facilitating pathways for rehabilitation, including ongoing discussions with the Fiji Corrections Service to enhance support for inmates grappling with addiction issues. Many prisoners have expressed serious concerns regarding the lack of adequate programs and support systems tailored to their needs.

The proposed legislation’s focus on reintegration aims to ensure that as individuals recovering from drug use re-enter their communities, they have access to essential support systems that can help them avoid reverting to substance abuse. Additionally, Lave noted that while drawing inspiration from international policies and frameworks related to drug rehabilitation and control, the bill will be customized to suit the unique context of the Pacific.

Public consultations on the proposed Counter Narcotics Bill are set to continue next week, as the government seeks to involve the community in the discourse surrounding drug policy and support mechanisms. This approach not only underscores the importance of collaborative efforts in combating drug abuse but also reflects a proactive stance towards creating long-term solutions for a healthier, more supportive environment for individuals recovering from addiction.
