The escalating cost of living in Fiji has emerged as a pivotal issue, as emphasized by Opposition Member of Parliament Praveen Bala during a recent parliamentary discussion. He pointed out that many ordinary Fijians are struggling to keep up with rising expenses, particularly following the introduction of a 15 percent Value Added Tax (VAT) on goods and services, exacerbating financial pressures on households.
Bala criticized the government for its insufficient support for small and medium enterprises, which he claims are “suffocating” due to increased expenses and limited governmental aid. He raised concerns regarding the functionality of current fiscal strategies, especially considering that recent revenue collection has not led to substantial improvements in citizens’ quality of life.
Additionally, he highlighted the declining state of public services, particularly the lack of essential medications in hospitals and deteriorating conditions for healthcare workers. Bala expressed alarm over frequent power outages during surgeries and the slow progress of infrastructure development, notably affecting rural communities that face these pressing challenges most acutely.
Echoing these sentiments, other Opposition MPs have previously expressed similar concerns. Independent MP Virendra Lal criticized the lack of innovative solutions in the government’s budget for 2024-2025, which he believes fails to ease the burden on those grappling with high living costs. Hem Chand also spoke out against the static VAT rate, arguing that it significantly contributes to rising poverty levels.
On a brighter note, Deputy Prime Minister Prof. Biman Prasad has introduced a three-pronged plan aimed at alleviating these cost of living challenges. He recognized that while external economic pressures are significant, it is critical to prioritize support for vulnerable communities. This includes implementing policy adjustments to lower costs and increasing income levels through substantial pay raises for civil servants, particularly teachers.
This comprehensive approach seeks both immediate relief and long-term improvements in the economic landscape. Although the issues surrounding the cost of living in Fiji remain urgent, the focus on strategies that aim to foster economic stability provides a hopeful outlook for citizens as they navigate these challenges.
