The Fiji Corrections Services (FCS) has announced the successful completion of its Job Evaluation Exercise (JEE), which has resulted in the establishment of 81 new positions across various fields, including administration, technical roles, and ranking officer positions. This initiative, which received approval from the Cabinet and was supported by Parliament through the national budget, marks a significant organizational overhaul aimed at modernizing the department’s structure.
During a recent parliamentary session, Minister for Justice Siromi Turaga clarified that traditional notions of promotion and demotion are no longer applicable within the FCS. Instead, the movement of officers within the rank structure will be dictated by their respective job performance and the overall needs of the organization, as they transition to their new roles.
Turaga emphasized the importance of realigning the organization’s structure and updating Human Resources policies. He stated that this realignment reflects the evolving requirements of the corrections field and allows for appropriate compensation that corresponds to the experience and qualifications of personnel.
Notably, this marks the first job evaluation exercise for the FCS in nearly 40 years, indicating a long-awaited step toward modernizing employment practices within the department. Through this exercise, clear job descriptions for all officer roles have been established, along with the development of an organizational chart to illustrate the new positions.
The initiative represents a hopeful shift towards a more efficient and effectively structured Fiji Corrections Services. By aligning job roles with performance and organizational needs, the FCS is poised to enhance its operational effectiveness and employee satisfaction.
