Fiji’s Corrections Commissioner, Dr. Jalesi Nakarawa, has been placed on leave amid serious allegations concerning governance and potential breaches within the Fiji Corrections Service. Minister for Justice Siromi Turaga announced this decision after receiving reports that raised significant concerns about the conduct and management under Nakarawa’s leadership.

In a coordinated effort with the Prime Minister and the Chairman of the Constitutional Offices Commission (COC), Turaga has invoked Section 22(1) of the Fiji Corrections Service Act 2006 to initiate an independent investigation into the matter. During this investigation, Dr. Nakarawa will remain on leave with full entitlements, while Deputy Commissioner Auta Moceisuva steps in as Acting Commissioner.

Minister Turaga emphasized the Ministry of Justice’s commitment to integrity, good governance, justice, and transparency within the Corrections Services. He assured the public that the investigation will be thorough, transparent, and adhere to the rule of law.

This situation, although challenging, presents an opportunity for the Fiji Corrections Service to address underlying issues and reinforce its commitment to responsible governance and accountability. Through this investigation, there is hope for improving the institution and restoring public trust.
