The Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) has announced the appointment of Pranil Singh as the acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO), succeeding Joel Abraham, who has stepped down to become the Executive Director of the Asia Pacific Regulatory Centre (APRC). Abraham had a significant impact during his tenure since 2016, particularly in strengthening consumer protections and enhancing market regulations across Fiji.

Cecil Browne, the Board Chair, expressed his appreciation for Abraham’s leadership, recognizing him as a key figure in bolstering the FCCC’s consumer protection framework and facilitating a competitive market. Abraham was also pivotal in establishing the Pacific Islands Network of Competition, Consumer Protection, and Economic Regulators (PINCCER), an initiative aimed at elevating collaboration and regulatory practices throughout the Pacific region. His efforts left a substantial mark on the regulatory landscape, elevating standards and practices in consumer advocacy.

As Singh steps into the acting CEO role, he is anticipated to uphold the FCCC’s dedication to protecting consumer rights and fostering a well-functioning marketplace. Browne remarked that Singh’s leadership presents an opportunity for the FCCC to embrace new ideas and perspectives, reinforcing its mission to nurture a balanced and thriving market environment.

With more than 30 years of experience in the private sector, Singh’s extensive leadership background positions him well for this critical transitional phase. He will guide the FCCC until a permanent replacement is appointed.

This leadership change is viewed positively, suggesting a promising future for both the FCCC and the consumers in Fiji, with anticipated improvements in regulatory practices and consumer advocacy. The organization is committed to continuous enhancement of its operations, ensuring better consumer protections, and paving the way for further advancements in the regulatory framework.
