Fiji’s Acting Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Professor Biman Prasad, has emphasized the necessity for a review of the 2013 Constitution, which has faced significant criticism since its implementation. During the Economy Breakfast Talanoa held in Suva, he highlighted that a deeper understanding of the Constitution’s influence on national governance and public policy is crucial.

Professor Prasad stated that the Cabinet has approved the initiation of this review, noting that the Constitution was adopted through an illegal process that did not reflect the will of the people. He encouraged various stakeholders to share their perspectives, which will be instrumental as the government navigates this review.

The expected Constitution Amendment Bill will be presented to Parliament during the sessions in March, along with the establishment of a Constitution Review Commission (CRC) aimed at engaging the public in consultations to ensure their voices are included in the amendment process.

This development closely corresponds with Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka’s earlier announcements regarding constitutional reform, which was a significant theme during the 2022 general elections. The government’s commitment to review the Constitution is seen as a strategic effort to address long-standing public concerns and foster a more inclusive democracy.

This constitutional review aligns with the broader goals set forth in the 2025-2029 National Development Plan (NDP), which focuses on protecting citizens’ rights and promoting transparency within governmental institutions. With a structured approach to public engagement, Fiji’s government aims to create a legal framework that genuinely serves and reflects the interests of all its citizens.

In summary, the review of the 2013 Constitution marks a hopeful step towards enhancing Fiji’s democratic processes, paving the way for greater citizen participation, and ultimately striving for a more equitable future. Engaging the public in this journey is essential for rebuilding trust and ensuring that the governance framework is aligned with the aspirations of the Fijian people.
