Independent MP Jone Usamate shared his perspective on the need for constitutional evolution during an interview on The Lens@177. He emphasized that no constitution can remain unchanged indefinitely and must reflect the aspirations and best interests of the people.

Mr. Usamate chose not to comment further on the potential for a constitutional review, indicating that the Group of 16 would come together to deliberate and issue a collective statement. He noted that their leader, Inia Seruiratu, has already addressed the matter in detail.

When responding to remarks made by MP Viliame Naupoto, Mr. Usamate acknowledged Naupoto’s right to share his opinions. He underscored that the constitution should always prioritize the welfare of the nation, stating, “Ultimately, no constitution is always going to be static forever.”

He highlighted that changing circumstances and environments necessitate the evolution of the constitution to better serve the people. Mr. Usamate also commented on a lecture from Australian National University constitutional law expert Professor Anthony Regan, stating that he valued diverse interpretations regarding the constitution.

Asked about the availability of constitutional experts in Fiji for a potential review process, Mr. Usamate refrained from expressing a strong opinion. He stated that his primary concern is the creation of the best possible constitution, while also emphasizing the importance of thorough discussions within their group on these issues.
