The countdown has officially started for Fiji’s most anticipated secondary schools sporting event, the Coca-Cola Games, with the launch of the Powerade National Torch Relay. This year is particularly special as it marks the 50th anniversary of the Games, set to occur in 2025, celebrating the long-standing partnership between Coca-Cola Fiji and the Fiji Secondary Schools Athletics Association (FSSAA).
The Powerade National Torch Relay commenced yesterday at the CCEP Fiji manufacturing site in Laucala Beach Estate, and will travel through various locations, including Ovalau, Viti Levu, and Vanua Levu, for the next five weeks. The torch will pass through two major cities and eleven towns before reaching its final destination at the HFC Bank Stadium on April 24, where a total of 130 students from 50 selected secondary schools will carry it. This event is expected to amp up excitement across the nation, culminating with MGM High School and Marist Brothers High School leading the final leg of the relay.
Scheduled from April 24-26, the Coca-Cola Games is more than a mere competition; it serves as a significant milestone that fosters community engagement, camaraderie, and athletic excellence among schools. The event has a rich history of producing remarkable performances, drawing passionate spectators and supporters of young athletes.
As part of the exciting celebrations, the relay will conclude with the official lighting of the Coca-Cola Games Cauldron, which symbolizes the start of Fiji’s largest and longest-running school sports event. Organizers from CCEP Fiji also thanked their partners, including CK’s Mega Bargain, Digicel, Fiji Gas, Fiji Water, and Pacific Energy, for their continuous support, essential to the success of the Powerade National Torch Relay.
Similar to previous sporting events in Fiji, such as the Fiji Finals, which have garnered live broadcast coverage, the Coca-Cola Games aims to elevate the visibility of youthful talent, motivate schools, and build a stronger culture of sportsmanship within the community.
