The Acting Prime Minister and Minister for Civil Service, Viliame Gavoka, addressed civil servants at a recent Civil Service Day celebration in Suva, emphasizing the importance of creating a drug-free and violence-free environment in Fiji. He called on those struggling with drug abuse or experiencing violence to seek help, stressing that assistance is always accessible.

“Every individual in our civil service plays a crucial role, often working long hours and facing challenging conditions to serve our nation,” said Gavoka. He acknowledged the dedication of civil servants, particularly those who extend their services to remote and underserved areas.

Gavoka expressed optimism regarding a recent three percent salary increment, hoping it would help civil servants manage the challenges of their duties while supporting their families. He emphasized that civil servants are the backbone of Fiji’s democracy and that promoting a safe and respectful environment is essential, particularly for women.

These remarks echo concerns raised by Luke Rokovada, chairman of the Public Service Commission, about the urgent need to tackle drug abuse and violence against women. Similar calls have been made for civil servants to acknowledge and actively combat these societal issues, highlighting a collaborative approach aimed at fostering safety, respect, and dignity within the workforce.

As Fiji confronts these pressing challenges, the collective efforts of civil servants, community leaders, and government officials offer a hopeful vision for a future characterized by compassion and progress. The initiatives being implemented reflect a strong commitment to addressing these social issues, with the aim of ensuring that all individuals can thrive in a secure and supportive environment.
