Fiji has recently been elevated from an “obstructed” status to a “narrowed” state, recognizing the government’s progress in expanding space for civil society and facilitating fundamental freedoms under the current Coalition government. This change was announced by the CIVICUS Monitor, which noted that in the past two years, the Fijian government has taken significant strides in improving civic space, particularly by repealing a restrictive media law that had been in place since 2010 and lifting travel bans that had been imposed on critics of the government.

A “narrowed” status indicates that while the government allows individuals and civil society organizations to exercise their rights to freedom of association, peaceful assembly, and expression, there are still instances where these rights are violated. Josef Benedict, the Asia Pacific Researcher at the CIVICUS Monitor, highlighted the importance of civil society in fostering these positive developments, emphasizing the need for ongoing consultation and engagement between civil groups and the government for sustained progress.

Fiji’s score has seen an improvement of 8 points this year, rising from 56 to 64, which positions the country among those classified as “narrowed” worldwide. However, challenges remain; concerns about fundamental freedoms linger as the Public Order Act has yet to be reviewed, allowing authorities to continue imposing restrictions on peaceful assembly and expression.

For Fiji to strive towards a fully open state by 2025, it is imperative that all restrictive laws are evaluated and repealed to prevent the suppression of dissenting voices. Ensuring the right to peaceful protest, including sensitive issues such as Palestine, must be upheld and protected without discrimination.

This positive development in Fiji reflects a growing commitment to enhancing civil liberties and underscores the vital role of civil society in this transformation. With continued efforts towards reform, there is hope for a more open and democratic environment in the years to come.

Summary: Fiji has been upgraded to a “narrowed” status, indicating improved civil society space and fundamental freedoms under the Coalition government. Despite recent progress, concerns about ongoing restrictions remain. Continued reforms and engagement are crucial for a future of greater openness by 2025.
