The Fiji Council of Churches has established climate change and drug abuse as central strategic priorities. The Archbishop of the Catholic Church in Fiji, Peter Loy Chong, emphasized the urgency of these issues and the need for widespread discussion. He noted the strong connections between domestic struggles, such as family instability and drug abuse, stating that some children turn to drugs due to unmet needs at home.

Archbishop Loy Chong articulated that the dialogue surrounding drug issues should not only focus on the act of drug use but also explore the underlying reasons why children engage in such behavior. He explained that during adolescence, individuals search for belonging and self-worth, factors often neglected by families and society. He believes that a condemning religious culture could further alienate these youths and exacerbate their struggles.

To address these interconnected issues, the archbishop announced the development of a program through their youth ministry, aiming to partner with UNICEF and the government’s Youth Ministry. He called for a collaborative effort among churches, organizations, and government entities to provide supportive frameworks for young people, emphasizing that simply focusing on the drug issue without recognizing the human element would fail to encourage genuine growth and development.

This initiative reflects a broader commitment from various religious groups in Fiji to tackle the rising concerns regarding drug abuse, teenage pregnancies, and violence. Similar sentiments were expressed by leaders from the Methodist Church, who highlighted the critical need for collective action from faith groups to tackle these social crises more effectively.

The proactive response from the Fiji Council of Churches and other religious organizations represents a beacon of hope for the community. Their collaborative approach is essential in nurturing a supportive environment that encourages the well-being of youth and addresses the root causes of drug abuse, ultimately fostering a healthier society for future generations.
