In Fiji, there is currently an adequate supply of cement to satisfy local demand while Pacific Cement Limited (PCL) is temporarily out of operation due to a mill breakdown. The Fiji Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) has confirmed that despite PCL’s production halt since March, customers can expect their needs to be met without significant delays.

FCCC Chief Executive Senikavika Jiuta stated that the commission is actively collaborating with both PCL and Tengy Cement to monitor the cement supply chain closely. Following the mill’s malfunction, which was reported on March 12, PCL’s parent company, Fijian Holdings Limited (FHL), has been managing existing stock while also planning to import cement to fulfill essential customer requirements. PCL’s repairs are underway, with an expected completion date of May 27.

Jiuta emphasized the importance of cement for Fijians and assured consumers that there is no need to worry about shortages. She mentioned that Tengy Cement is increasing production at both its Suva and Lautoka mills by adding an extra shift to help cover any supply gaps. The FCCC is committed to preventing price exploitation during this transitional phase and urges consumers to report any unfair pricing practices.

This stabilizing of the cement supply is particularly relevant as Fiji’s construction sector is poised for recovery. Previous reports highlighted an 8.9% decline in infrastructure project values earlier this year, but with the increasing demand for construction materials, there are prospects for an optimistic rebound.

In summary, while PCL works through its operational challenges, the proactive measures taken by both the FCCC and local suppliers indicate a concerted effort towards ensuring stability in the cement market, which may positively impact Fiji’s economy in the near future. This situation reflects a collective commitment to supporting the needs of the community and nurturing ongoing improvements as local infrastructure demands rise.
