Fiji Media Association General Secretary Stanley Simpson emphasized the necessity of unshakeable media freedom during his speech at the World Press Freedom Day celebration at the University of the South Pacific’s Laucala Campus. He underscored that media independence should be upheld consistently, and not selectively when it benefits those in power. Simpson called upon politicians to support the media, enabling journalists to perform their vital duties without any interference.

Simpson noted that even though Fiji’s political landscape has become more open, it still poses challenges for journalists aiming to maintain their independence. He acknowledged the repeal of the Media Industry Development Act as a positive step that significantly improved the media landscape by removing detrimental restrictions on press freedom. He expressed gratitude to the current government for this important change.

Highlighting the importance of journalism, he stated that it plays a crucial role in holding the powerful accountable. He praised the resilience of journalists in Fiji, who face personal attacks, misinformation, and online abuse, while insisting that their work is instrumental in promoting transparency and accountability in society. He conveyed a message to students, reminding them that journalism should aim for truth and accuracy rather than popularity on social media.

In the context of freedom of expression, Simpson’s remarks echo previous acknowledgments from government officials, including Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, who have celebrated the progress made in Fiji’s media landscape since the repeal of restrictive laws. Rabuka and other leaders have underscored the essential role of journalists in a democracy, calling for a culture of responsibility and truth in media practices.

Highlighting the current environment as an opportunity for growth, Simpson’s remarks are a testament to the enduring struggle for a vibrant media in Fiji. This celebration of World Press Freedom Day not only fosters discourse on challenging issues but also showcases the ongoing commitment to a free and independent media that is crucial for informed citizenry.
