Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has urged for increased unity and a deeper understanding of Girmit history, advocating that it is a collective legacy shaping the diverse cultures and ethnicities in Fiji. At the conclusion of the 146th Girmit Commemoration in Labasa, the Prime Minister emphasized the vital role that unity and peace play in fostering a better future for the nation.

During his address, he remarked that the descendants of Girmitiya, the indentured laborers from India, have long been part of Fijian society and have witnessed first-hand that peace and unity pave the way for progress. He pointed out that the story of the Girmitiya has transcended its origins, becoming an integral part of Fiji’s narrative.

Rabuka proclaimed, “To intermingle, our history may have been different. Now we go fast forward for 146 years; we need to focus not on what divides us, but rather on what unites us.” He highlighted that the banner of “one nation, one destiny” is the only path forward.

As part of the commemorative activities, Prime Minister Rabuka honored 27 Girmitiya descendants for their significant contributions to their communities and national development. The celebrations, held at Subrail Park in Labasa and featuring a vibrant march through town, saw participation from hundreds, including civil servants, religious organizations, cabinet ministers, and diplomatic representatives.

This year’s theme, “Preserving the Past, Envisioning the Future,” embodies a commitment to cultural preservation while fostering unity among Fiji’s diverse communities. Similar sentiments were echoed in previous Girmit celebrations, emphasizing the importance of remembering struggles endured by the Girmityas and encouraging the spirit of inclusivity and collaboration moving forward.

The annual observance not only honors the historical contributions and hardships faced by the Girmityas but also serves as a hopeful reminder of the potential for continued unity and progress in Fiji. The involvement and recognition of diverse community members illustrate a collective commitment to embracing cultural heritage, instilling hope for a harmonious future as all citizens work together towards shared goals.
