Minister for Multi-Ethnic Affairs, Charan Jeath Singh, has publicly condemned the vandalism incident that took place at the Samabula Shiv Mandir. He regarded the act as not only criminal but also a direct affront to the core values that define Fiji—respect, peace, and religious harmony.

In his statement, Singh emphasized that all places of worship must be dignified and protected, reaffirming the Coalition Government’s strong stance on safeguarding the religious and cultural rights of every Fijian. He declared, “We will not tolerate any form of religious intolerance or hatred,” an assertion that aligns with ongoing concerns highlighted by community leaders regarding recent acts of sacrilege across Fiji.

Authorities have been urged by Singh to carry out a thorough investigation to hold accountable those responsible for this vandalism. He has extended his support to the temple’s devotees and urged the wider community to come together in a spirit of unity and mutual respect. The Minister stressed that “Fiji belongs to all of us,” calling for a collective commitment to maintain the island nation’s spirit of diversity.

Recent incidents of vandalism, including a desecration of sacred texts at the Vunicuicui Shiv Mandir, have raised alarms about the safety of religious spaces and the need for protective measures. Community leaders believe these distressing acts, while tragic, also present opportunities for dialogue among different faiths, promoting understanding and respect. It is seen as essential that Fiji fosters an inclusive environment that combats intolerance and strengthens communal bonds.

The repeated calls for investigations and community engagement reflect a collective aspiration within Fiji for a united society mutually respecting the diverse beliefs that enrich the nation. By promoting open dialogue and protecting places of worship, there is hope for a future where communities can thrive together in harmony.
