A total of 683 Fijians left the country in April for longer-term absences spanning one year or more, as reported by the Fiji Bureau of Statistics. This group includes 481 individuals who will be away for 1-5 years, while 202 departed for over five years or permanently.
In April alone, 1,042 Fijians exited Fiji for employment opportunities abroad. Of those, 488 are expected to be away for less than three months, 374 for 3-12 months, and 180 for a duration of 1-5 years.
These statistics reflect ongoing migration trends, similar to those noted in July when 1,110 Fijians left for extended absences. In that case, primary reasons for departure included employment and education-related opportunities. This migratory pattern indicates a broader search for better prospects abroad.
It’s essential to recognize that while these departures can create challenges for families and communities left behind, many Fijians who gain international experience may ultimately return enriched with skills and perspectives that can positively impact Fiji’s economy and society. Such movements of labor can be seen as a contributing factor to cultural exchange and economic growth in the long run.
