Gender equality is an essential goal that calls on men and boys to actively engage in dismantling harmful stereotypes, respecting women’s rights, and standing against violence. Minister for Women Sashi Kiran emphasizes that achieving gender equality and empowering women is vital for fostering equitable economies and sustainable development.

On International Women’s Day, themed “For All Women and Girls: Rights. Equality. Empowerment,” Kiran celebrated women’s achievements while highlighting the necessity of ensuring that all women and girls, regardless of their backgrounds, can lead dignified, violence-free lives and gain equal opportunities.

In Fiji, the journey toward gender equality faces challenges, particularly for women with disabilities in rural and urban areas. An often overlooked aspect is women’s unpaid care work, which is crucial for families and future generations but remains unrecognized.

The threat of gender-based violence, including online abuse, poses a significant risk to women’s safety and dignity. Kiran urges communities to form prevention committees dedicated to protecting girls and women. She also calls for increased support for women’s leadership in politics and on corporate boards, as their perspectives are necessary for comprehensive societal progress.

In light of ongoing initiatives, Fiji’s government has adopted gender-responsive budgeting to ensure public policies and resources align with the needs of women and girls. This aligns with efforts highlighted in previous discussions on Fiji’s commitment to gender equality, which has seen notable progress but acknowledges that substantial barriers still exist.

The proactive engagement in championing gender equality in Fiji inspires hope for a more inclusive society. With sustained dedication to elevating women’s leadership and addressing inequality, endeavors towards a more equitable future for all citizens are within reach.
