The Minister for Health and Medical Services, Dr. Ratu Atonio Rabici Lalabalavu, represented Fiji at the Pacific Regional Council for Early Childhood Development (ECD) Forum in Samoa this week. During his address, he reported on the substantial advancements Fiji has made in supporting young children and their families, along with outlining future goals.
Dr. Lalabalavu highlighted Fiji’s multi-sectoral approach to early childhood development, which includes collaboration between government bodies, technical working groups, and partnerships with development agencies. A critical milestone in this process was the adoption of the Early Childhood Care Services Policy and Regulatory Framework in May 2024. This landmark policy, endorsed by the Cabinet, aims to enhance the safety and quality of childcare services, while also supporting working parents and fostering women’s economic empowerment by addressing systemic barriers.
Fiji reaffirmed its commitment to eliminating child violence by 2027, a pledge made during the First Global Ministerial Forum on Ending Violence Against Children. Dr. Lalabalavu elaborated that the national strategy will prioritize prevention, family preservation, and necessary legal reforms, including raising the age of criminal responsibility to 14. These measures are designed to protect children’s rights and update juvenile justice laws to ensure a nurturing environment for all children in Fiji.
This approach emphasizes the essential collaboration among government, civil society, and communities. The commitment to strengthen child protective measures, enhance educational opportunities, and invest in early childhood development is crucial for building a healthier, educated generation that can contribute positively to society.
Fiji’s ongoing efforts and strategic policies in early childhood care are promising steps towards a brighter future for its youngest citizens. By prioritizing health, nutrition, and educational opportunities, Fiji is working to ensure that every child has the foundation to thrive.
This news brings hope as it reflects a progressive vision for the welfare and rights of children in Fiji, fostering not only their immediate needs but also ensuring long-term societal benefits.
