The Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) has recently entered into significant agreements with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) aimed at promoting gender equality and enhancing rural electrification in Fiji. This collaboration is marked by the signing of a new Memorandum of Understanding that positions FCCC as the first public institution in Fiji to pursue the UNDP’s Gender Equality Seal for Public Institutions. This certification is designed to foster systems that promote inclusion and equal participation, especially for women and other vulnerable groups.

FCCC Chief Executive Senikavika Jiuta emphasized the importance of integrating gender equality into the commission’s daily operations. She stated that this initiative ensures that the regulatory work, particularly in relation to the Fiji Rural Electrification Fund (FREF), delivers tangible benefits, especially for women and girls in underserved communities. The agreement also aims to supply solar-powered electricity to 20 rural communities over the next two years, ultimately benefiting approximately 6,500 people, as well as providing energy to 15 schools and health centers. This move aligns with Fiji’s National Gender Policy and broader international commitments.

UNDP Pacific Representative Munkhtuya Altangerel commended FCCC’s leadership, highlighting that this is the first initiative of its kind in the Pacific, thereby setting a new regional benchmark. The partnership aligns with several Sustainable Development Goals, including promoting gender equality, ensuring affordable energy, and fostering robust institutions.

This progressive approach towards gender equality and rural electrification signals a positive trajectory for Fiji, contributing to the empowerment of women and supporting sustainable development in rural areas. By focusing on inclusive practices and renewable energy, these initiatives promote a hopeful vision for a more equitable and sustainable future for all Fijians.
