The Ministry of Health and Medical Services in Fiji has taken significant measures to address the ongoing global shortage of intravenous (IV) fluids by procuring 350,000 units for the year 2025. During a recent parliamentary session, Minister for Health Dr. Atonio Lalabalavu detailed the ministry’s strategies to manage the supply of essential medications amid persistent challenges in the international supply chain.

Dr. Lalabalavu highlighted that the Fiji Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Services (FPBS) is implementing a proactive approach to ensure that IV fluid stock levels never fall below a critical threshold, defined as less than three months of supply. This involves regular monthly purchases and emergency buyouts through requests for quotes (RFQs), which allow for quicker procurement of essential supplies.

Despite the global shortage, which affects various types of IV products, Dr. Lalabalavu assured that no national shortage exists in Fiji. He noted that the FPBS has successfully secured alternative sources for IV fluids from different international markets, with regular shipments expected to sustain the supply for up to six months.

The ongoing situation has raised concerns about the capacity of Fiji’s healthcare system, particularly in light of a surge in cases of dengue fever. However, it has also prompted discussions on the potential for reforms in healthcare procurement processes, as experts see this as an opportunity to enhance the resilience and efficiency of the healthcare supply chain.

In line with previous statements from the Health Ministry, there is a strong emphasis on collaboration among health stakeholders to ensure that supplies are adequately managed and that health services are maintained. This proactive response not only addresses immediate needs but also positions Fiji’s healthcare system for a stronger future, ultimately ensuring that all citizens have access to necessary medical resources in a timely manner.

The Ministry remains optimistic that by tackling the current challenges and improving procurement frameworks, Fiji can better equip itself to meet the health demands of its population. This optimistic outlook reflects a commitment to strengthening healthcare infrastructure and enhancing overall health outcomes for all Fijians.
