Fiji is taking a significant leap towards the digital economy with the launch of its National E-Commerce Strategy 2025-2029, marking a pivotal moment for the nation’s businesses and entrepreneurs. The strategy aims to integrate Fiji into the rapidly expanding global e-commerce landscape, which is growing at an impressive annual rate of 8.5 percent.

Permanent Secretary for Trade, Shaheen Ali, emphasizing the urgency for Fiji to adapt to this digital shift, stated, “We must embrace, adapt, and lead in this new digital era.” He highlighted that the strategy would ensure that every Fijian entrepreneur, regardless of their location, has access to global markets through digital trade. This accessibility is expected to empower local businesses across sectors including tourism, agriculture, and manufacturing.

Ali noted that while the opportunities are plentiful, there are also substantial obstacles to overcome. Key challenges include the need for more accessible digital payment systems and improved logistics, both of which are essential for fostering a thriving e-commerce sector. The strategy recognizably addresses issues related to costly online payment solutions faced by many micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs). Collaborative efforts with financial institutions are underway to enhance the national payments system.

In parallel to Ali’s remarks, Deputy Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica has reiterated the importance of this initiative in creating a digital trading environment where Fijian products can thrive in the global market. He articulated a vision for widespread economic empowerment, emphasizing that every Fijian, from rural farmers to urban tech innovators, should be equipped to succeed in the digital economy.

The launching framework includes a dedicated National E-Commerce Committee tasked with coordinating efforts, monitoring progress, and driving the necessary reforms articulated in the strategy. With a clear implementation roadmap featuring timelines and performance indicators, the government is committed to turning this vision into reality.

Amid this transformation, there is a hopeful sentiment regarding the potential benefits of e-commerce. As the country enhances its digital infrastructure and fosters partnerships across industries, Fiji is positioned to harness the opportunities within the global e-commerce landscape. The drive towards improved digital literacy and logistics is also likely to usher in greater participation from local entrepreneurs, enriching the economy and enhancing the lives of Fijians.

In summary, Fiji’s National E-Commerce Strategy represents a robust commitment to embracing the digital era, reinforcing the country’s potential as a growing digital trade hub in the region and paving the way for a resilient and inclusive economic future.
