The Ministry of Trade has launched an ambitious plan aimed at empowering and engaging the Fijian diaspora abroad, with a clear focus on enhancing savings and investment opportunities. Minister Manoa Kamikamica reported that the recent USA-Fiji Investments and Savings initiative was met with significant enthusiasm from the diaspora, prompting the ministry to develop a more detailed engagement strategy.
Minister Kamikamica emphasized the direct impact diaspora investments have on Fiji’s GDP, stating that the funds generated from such initiatives support local businesses, create job opportunities, and drive infrastructure development. He highlighted the importance of facilitating investments in critical areas like land and housing, suggesting that these efforts promote long-term economic participation and stability for Fiji.
Moreover, the Minister pointed out that engaging with the diaspora fosters a sense of loyalty and belonging, encouraging individuals to return home, retire, and establish businesses. He noted that beyond financial investments, the diaspora is a rich source of knowledge, skills, and networks which can catalyze innovation and growth within Fiji.
Going forward, the ministry plans to institutionalize the USA-Fiji Investment and Savings drive as an annual event, aligning it with Fiji Day celebrations to boost participation. Additionally, there are plans to extend this initiative to other countries. Minister Kamikamica mentioned that the ministry aims to identify and eliminate barriers impeding investment opportunities, focusing on innovative partnerships, including one with the HFC bank.
The overarching goal is to create an inclusive environment that allows every Fijian, regardless of their location, to contribute to the nation’s progress without facing unnecessary obstacles. The minister is also in the process of drafting a policy specifically aimed at the diaspora, which will soon be presented for cabinet approval. This policy is expected to attract more investment, facilitate wealth creation, and significantly enhance the well-being of Fijians.
This proactive initiative not only seeks to harness the potential of the Fijian diaspora for economic development but also strengthens relationships between Fijians abroad and their homeland, fostering a sense of community and shared purpose. Such efforts are a promising step towards building a sustainable economic future for Fiji.
In summary, the Ministry of Trade is making significant strides to engage Fijians overseas, aiming for a more connected and economically vibrant Fiji by tapping into the diaspora’s resources and expertise.
