The Fijian government has announced an ambitious initiative to train 250,000 individuals in digital literacy skills by 2030, as part of their National Digital Strategy aimed at fostering an inclusive and connected economy. This initiative underscores the government’s recognition of the need to equip its citizens with vital skills necessary for success in an increasingly digital global economy.

Shaheen Ali, Permanent Secretary for Communications, emphasized that the program will extend beyond basic digital skills to include competencies in areas such as data analysis, cybersecurity, and software development—skills that are critical for thriving in today’s job market. He articulated a vision where this initiative not only enhances the quantity but also the quality of digital engagement, aiming to generate over 40,000 high-paying jobs in the digital and related sectors.

This strategy aligns with a recent push by the government to integrate Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) into the education system, ensuring students gain the essential skills required for the modern workforce. Highlighted by previous surveys, a large majority of students acknowledge the importance of digital skills, indicating a growing awareness and readiness to embrace technological advancements.

Moreover, the national consultation workshops and educational reforms underline Fiji’s commitment to inclusive digital literacy. These past initiatives, along with the proposed standalone digital literacy curriculum, show a comprehensive approach to bridging existing gaps identified in previous assessments regarding digital and financial literacy.

As the government sets its sights on elevating Fiji’s status among the Asia-Pacific’s top digital economies, the collective efforts in fostering a digitally capable workforce instill a hopeful perspective on the nation’s future. With a focus on empowering citizens from all walks of life, these ongoing developments promise to pave the way for greater opportunities, innovation, and economic resilience in the years to come.
