Fiji’s Bold New Strategy for National Security: What You Need to Know

The Fiji National Security and Defence Review (NSDR) aims to provide a strategic framework for Fiji to address various complex challenges that endanger its sovereignty and stability. During the NSDR launch at the Grand Pacific Hotel in Suva, Home Affairs and Immigration Minister Pio Tikoduadua highlighted the contemporary security landscape, which includes issues such as cyber threats, climate change, transnational crime, and geopolitical tensions.

He emphasized the necessity for Fiji to be both agile and proactive in responding to these challenges. A key aspect of the review is the advocacy for a comprehensive approach to security that involves the entire government and society. In this model, the Republic of Fiji Military Forces and the Fiji Police Force are essential, but they are expected to collaborate effectively with other government bodies, civil society, and the private sector. Tikoduadua made it clear that national security is a collective duty that engages everyone.

The editorial team contributing their insights to this review includes Professor Satish Chand (Chair), Associate Professor Shailendra Singh, Assistant Professor Ana Rokomokoti, and NSDR Independent lead Jim Sanday. Community consultations will gather primary data from both government and civil society for the NSDR.
