The Coalition Government is set to enhance international initiatives aimed at improving water services across the country, given the constraints of Fiji’s national budget.
Public Works Minister Ro Filipe Tuisawau highlighted the critical relationship between water and energy, noting that effective water delivery relies on access to energy. He emphasized the importance of the water-energy nexus when seeking climate financing.
Ro Filipe stated that it is essential to make the most of available opportunities. For Small Island Developing States (SIDS) like Fiji, having reliable access to basic utilities such as water and energy is vital for daily survival, especially for grassroots communities. This also extends to necessary infrastructure like roads.
Tuisawau underscored the importance of promoting the water-energy connection at the grassroots level to help alleviate poverty and bring about significant changes in everyday life.
He urged stakeholders to focus on this nexus when pursuing climate funding, particularly in evaluating natural spring and groundwater resources through advanced solar technology, including solar-powered borehole pumps and desalination plants.
According to Tuisawau, innovative programs implemented through smart national frameworks could act as a transformative force, particularly benefiting maritime communities.
Additionally, the Coalition Government has made progress in its partnership with catchment landowners by securing Cabinet approval for a framework and policy that compensates landowners for standing trees in catchment zones.
The government remains committed to engaging with all stakeholders, particularly landowners, to address their concerns within the existing legal frameworks.
