A new career center is set to be established in Fiji to address the ongoing labor shortage in the country. This initiative, led by Natural Waters of Viti Pte Limited, the parent company of FIJI Water, aims to replicate a successful model implemented in California. Marigold Moody, the assistant general counsel for the South Pacific, made this announcement during the Top Executives Conference 2024 at the Sofitel Fiji Resort and Spa in Denarau.

Moody emphasized that the career center is a crucial investment in Fiji’s workforce, focusing on skills development to meet the specific needs of local employers. She highlighted the pressing demand for skilled seafarers to operate the company’s vessels, pointing out that the Pacific Islands face a significant skills shortage in this area. With current plans indicating an investment of over FJ$140 million to expand FIJI Water’s capacity by approximately 47%, Moody noted that the business will require a larger workforce over the next decade.

The proposed center, slated to partner with Fiji National University, aims to open in Suva by 2025. Moody shared insights on the existing education team in California that is actively fostering job readiness among employees. The goal is to create a skills pipeline tailored to the demands of local businesses.

The program will focus on aligning training with job market requirements, and Moody warned employers to be specific in their job advertisements to attract suitably qualified candidates. Additionally, the initiative will seek participation from other entities within the manufacturing and marine sectors through an industry council to enhance collaboration and skill development.

This proposal not only seeks to alleviate the labor shortage but also promises to enhance local employment opportunities and contribute positively to Fiji’s economic landscape. The initiative reflects a proactive approach to workforce development, paving the way for a more skilled population ready to meet industry demands.

In summary, the introduction of a career center in Fiji represents a significant step towards nurturing local talent and addressing the skills gap in various industries, ultimately strengthening the nation’s economy.
