In a bid to address escalating public safety concerns, Fiji’s Commissioner of Police, Rusiate Tudravu, has mandated an increase in police patrols and a focused effort on monitoring individuals showing suspicious behavior or loitering in public areas. This initiative highlights the importance of police presence, particularly in known hotspots, including abandoned properties, to deter criminal activity.
Commissioner Tudravu emphasized that community visibility and proactive engagement are fundamental aspects of effective policing. He stated, “These are the basics of policing: visibility, asking questions, and clearing out those who have no valid reason for being where they are found.” He added that efforts will also be made to redirect the focus of local youth towards positive activities, responding to concerns about their reported involvement in harassing behavior.
Recognizing the critical role of community collaboration, Tudravu noted that the success of this initiative relies heavily on the involvement of the public. He expressed the goal of fostering positive interactions with youths, ultimately steering them towards productive engagements.
The Commissioner also acknowledged the ongoing efforts of Crime Prevention Committees (CPCs) in supporting the police through community-based strategies to reduce crime. “The community-centered approach is the way forward. We know that support from communities is strong, especially through the work of CPCs and neighborhood watch zones. By combining our efforts, we can significantly reduce crime,” Tudravu stated.
A key aspect of this initiative involves the re-establishment and further development of Crime Prevention Committees across all five policing divisions. The Fiji Police Force aims to retain a united front against criminal activities by closely collaborating with local communities.
The renewed focus on enhancing police visibility is a proactive approach that seeks not only to combat crime but also to rebuild trust between law enforcement and communities. By working together, there is optimism that these strategies will foster a safer environment for all residents of Fiji.
This initiative is a hopeful step towards improving public safety and reflects a commitment to address the underlying issues that affect community interactions and youth behavior.
