The International Labour Organization (ILO) is actively collaborating with various partners in Fiji to bolster the protection and governance of migrant workers’ rights. At a recent Interagency Dialogue focused on this topic, Christian Viegelahn, the ILO Employment Specialist for Pacific Island Countries, emphasized the ongoing initiatives designed to assist the Fijian Government in crafting effective labour mobility frameworks.

Viegelahn remarked on Fiji’s unique position as both a source country for Fijian workers seeking opportunities abroad and as a destination for foreign workers. “This dual role presents both opportunities and obligations, particularly concerning ensuring that mobility benefits all, especially the most vulnerable,” he said.

The ILO is currently rolling out two regional labour mobility projects in the Pacific, with a significant focus on Fiji. These projects aim to strengthen governance systems, protect the rights of migrant workers, and maximize the developmental benefits of worker mobility.

A crucial aspect of these efforts includes providing technical support in the development of Fiji’s National Labour Mobility Policy. Viegelahn noted that this policy will serve as a framework to guarantee safe, inclusive, and sustainable labour mobility practices within the country. He also detailed the complementary nature of the National Employment Policy, which stakeholders have highlighted should prioritize innovation.

Further initiatives involve collaboration with the Fiji Trades Union Congress to enhance protections for migrant workers regarding their health care, ensuring they have access to essential services like pre-departure orientation, legal advice, and treatment support, therefore helping them exercise their rights.

Moreover, in conjunction with the Fiji Commerce and Employers Federation (FCEF), the ILO is conducting research aimed at improving the management of migrant workers, particularly in light of productivity issues and climate change challenges. These concrete measures reflect a steadfast commitment to fostering fair and well-governed labour mobility for both the Fijian workforce and migrant workers.

The positivity surrounding these developments offers hope that, with structured support and policies, Fiji can enhance protective measures for its workers in an increasingly globalized job market. The focus on inclusive and sustainable approaches will not only benefit individual workers but also contribute to the broader socio-economic well-being of Fiji.
