The Fijian Ministry of Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management is taking significant steps to enhance disaster preparedness by establishing multi-purpose evacuation centers across all four divisions of Fiji. Minister Sakiasi Ditoka announced the initiative during a recent address in Parliament, highlighting that the ministry has been allocated a budget of $1 million. This funding will be used for retrofitting 20 existing evacuation centers and constructing two new facilities within the current financial year.

Minister Ditoka emphasized that this plan complements an extensive Project funded by the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), which entails the construction of four new evacuation centers and retrofitting another four to meet humanitarian standards, with an overall budget of $12 million.

The previous success of retrofitting the Evacuation Center in Yavusania, Nadi, serves as a hallmark of these efforts. Launched recently, this center aims to provide critical protection for vulnerable populations during emergencies and serve as a central gathering point, thereby improving resilience and safety in the community.

Ditoka underscored the government’s commitment to enhancing the preparedness of the nation against the adversities posed by climate change. He expressed gratitude for the support received from international partners, including KOICA and the International Organization for Migration (IOM), reiterating the importance of collaborative efforts in achieving these goals.

This proactive approach by Fiji not only underscores the government’s responsibility towards safeguarding its citizens during natural disasters but also reflects a broader commitment to cultivating a culture of resilience and readiness for the future. The integration of community needs into disaster management strategies is paving the way for a safer environment, embodying hope for both the present and future challenges posed by nature.

In essence, these initiatives are not merely about enhancing infrastructure, but also about empowering communities and fostering a spirit of cooperation and resilience in the face of unavoidable natural phenomena.
