The Fiji Police Force is set to destroy approximately 4.15 tonnes of methamphetamine, following a High Court order, at the Dignified Crematorium. This large seizure, which holds an estimated street value of about $2 billion, was initially confiscated from a vacant property in Legalega, Nadi, in January of last year. Just a week later, another major seizure occurred in nearby Maqalevu, Nadi.

The destruction method chosen involves vaporizing the methamphetamine in a furnace, a widely recognized practice by law enforcement agencies internationally for safely disposing of illicit drugs. Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Crime Mesake Waqa stated that extensive consultations with various stakeholders, along with obtaining necessary clearances, have been instrumental in ensuring that the disposal process adheres to best practices while considering health and environmental concerns.

Waqa emphasized that the operation is organized to maintain transparency and uphold the integrity of the Fiji Police Force. Legal representatives for the defendants involved are permitted to observe the destruction process, with full details of the operation to be released to the public afterward for accountability.

Several governmental and local agencies are involved in this significant operation, including the Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Health and Medical Services, Ministry of Environment, and international law enforcement from Australia and New Zealand, among others. This collaboration reflects a united approach in tackling drug trafficking and emphasizes the commitment of authorities to public safety and environmental care.

Previously, the Lautoka High Court had deemed it impractical to store such a large volume of drugs during upcoming legal proceedings, citing risks to public safety and the integrity of the judicial process. This action marks an important step in Fiji’s ongoing fight against drug-related crime, reinforcing the importance of a collaborative and transparent legal system to address serious issues affecting the community.

This proactive stance not only highlights the determination of the law enforcement and judicial systems but also brings hope for a safer future, as steps are taken to eradicate influence of illicit substances from society. The effective planned process serves as a hopeful sign that strong measures are in place to combat drug trafficking and promote community welfare.
