Fiji is making strides toward becoming a manufacturing hub for intravenous (IV) fluids, with discussions underway involving potential investors. Health Minister Dr. Atonio Lalabalavu confirmed that talks are in progress with two investors interested in establishing IV fluid manufacturing plants in the country, which is a crucial response to the ongoing global shortages in this essential medical supply.

During a recent parliamentary session, Dr. Lalabalavu addressed questions from Opposition Leader Inia Seruiratu regarding previous discussions from 2020 aimed at setting up medical manufacturing facilities in Fiji. He highlighted that tax incentives are available for pharmaceutical companies that choose to invest in Fiji, particularly those focused on producing IV fluids.

The Minister’s visit to India opened new opportunities; he engaged with a significant Indian company specializing in manufacturing IV solutions, encouraging them to consider establishing operations in Fiji. Dr. Lalabalavu noted the potential to serve not just local demand but also to extend supply to neighboring countries in the Pacific region.

This initiative emerges against the backdrop of Fiji’s current reliance on imported medical supplies, which has been exacerbated by ongoing global supply chain disruptions. The Fiji Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Services has highlighted the need for approximately 350,000 bottles of IV fluids for the current fiscal year to meet local healthcare demands.

While the Ministry has received shipments to address immediate needs, they are actively seeking to bolster local production capabilities, reflecting a commitment to improving Fiji’s healthcare self-sufficiency. Experts view these steps as an essential move towards reforming the healthcare system, providing a hopeful outlook for a more reliable supply of essential medical supplies in the future.

As the government continues its efforts to engage international partners and develop local manufacturing, there is cautious optimism that these initiatives will ultimately lead to improved healthcare outcomes for Fiji’s population, further reinforcing the resilience and capability of its healthcare system.
